Scooters are equipped with a controller, a smallbox that manages all of the functions of the scooter. Controllers can be programmed by a technician for various specialized purposes. For example, the controller can be reprogrammed so that the maximum speed of the scooter is reduced (It cannot be increased, however).
Another way that the controller can be specially programmed is to switch the action of the throttle lever. Ordinarily, if you were to squeeze the right throttle lever, the scooter would go forward. Pushing the throttle lever usually makes most scooters go in reverse. The controller can be reprogrammed to reverse this action. The reason that you would want to do this is if the rider had some impairments that made it difficult for them to squeeze the throttle.
Controllers on all scooters from both Pride Mobility and Drive Medical can be reprogrammed to operate the scooter at a slower speed or with the throttle controls reversed. Reprogramming requires special equipment that only the manufacturer has.
Installing/replacing the controller is an easy process. See the FAQ on the topic.
