Drive Medical, the manufacturer for Scout scooters has added two removable plastic shims to the 12ah battery pack to ensure they fit more tightly and maintain better electrical contact with the scooter especially when riding over bumpier surfaces.
These shims come inserted into two of the holes on the underside of the battery case as shown in the pictures below. If you have a newer battery case that includes these two shims, there are two things you need to know:
1) These shims can make it more difficult to place the battery pack properly on the scooter and if not placed properly, the battery pack may not make connection to the scooter. You may have to push down with some force on the battery pack in order for it to seat properly and make a proper connection.
2) Should you need to take the top off the battery case (to replace the batteries, for example), you MUST remove the shims and then remove the two screws in the bottom of the two holes where the shims were along with the other six screws holding the top on. The shims can be pulled out of their holes with a pair of needle-nosed pliers. NOTE: Failure to remove the shims and screws located beneath the shims before attempting to take the top off the battery case will result in damage to battery case.
